How to Open a Demat Account in India: Step-by-Step (2026)

Everything about opening and using a Demat account via CDSL or NSDL in India. Compare broker features, charges, and platforms to pick the right one.

By ArthaLearn Team

Your gateway to the stock market

You cannot buy stocks in India without a Demat account. It is your digital locker for shares — just like a bank account holds money, a Demat account holds your investments. Setting one up takes 15 minutes.

What Is a Demat Account?

"Demat" stands for Dematerialisation — converting physical share certificates into electronic form. Before 1996, shares were actual paper certificates that you had to physically store and transfer. Today, all shares exist digitally in your Demat account.

You cannot buy stocks in India without one. It is your digital locker for securities — just like a bank account holds money, a Demat account holds your investments.

Demat Account vs Trading Account

These are two different things that work together. You need both to buy and sell stocks.

Demat Account

  • →Stores your shares electronically
  • →Like a bank locker for securities
  • →Maintained by Depository (CDSL/NSDL)
  • →Has a 16-digit DP ID
  • →You own it — broker cannot take shares without your instruction

Trading Account

  • →Executes buy/sell orders
  • →Interface to the exchange (NSE/BSE)
  • →Maintained by your broker
  • →Has a unique client ID
  • →Without this, Demat is just storage — you cannot trade

CDSL vs NSDL — Your Shares' Home

India has two depositories that hold all electronic shares. Your broker is a Depository Participant (DP) linked to one of them. You don't choose — your broker does. But you should know who holds your assets.

There is no practical difference for you as an investor. Both are SEBI-regulated. Your shares are equally safe in either. Your broker chooses — you just need to know which one holds your assets so you can verify your holdings independently at cdsl.com or nsdl.co.in.

How to Open a Demat Account

The entire process is online. No office visits. Takes 15–30 minutes if your documents are ready. Walk through each step — mark them as done.

Broker Comparison

Your broker choice affects your costs and experience every single trade. Discount brokers win on price. Full-service brokers provide research and advisory. Choose based on what you actually need.

Understand Every Charge Before You Pay It

Most new investors don't know the full cost of a trade until they see their statement. There are 6 different charges. Calculate them before you trade — not after.

Brokerage

Fee per trade. Discount brokers: ₹20 flat or 0.03%/0.05%, whichever is lower. Zerodha delivery trades are FREE. Intraday is ₹20 per executed order.

STT (Securities Transaction Tax)

Government tax. 0.1% on delivery buy + sell. 0.025% on intraday sell side only. Unavoidable. Goes directly to the government.

Exchange Charges

NSE charges ₹3.25 per ₹1 lakh turnover. BSE varies. Passed through by your broker. Very small but real.

DP Charges

Charged when you SELL from Demat. ₹13–18 per scrip per day. NOT charged on buying or intraday. Paid to your depository (CDSL/NSDL).

GST

18% GST on brokerage and exchange charges. If brokerage is ₹20, add ₹3.60 GST. Applied automatically. Cannot be avoided.

SEBI Turnover Charges

₹10 per crore of turnover. Negligible for retail traders but present. Goes to SEBI to fund market regulation.

Security — Protecting Your Account

Your Demat account holds real assets worth real money. Security is not optional. These are the actual threats retail investors face in India — and exactly how to defend against each.

SEBI now requires mandatory nomination for all Demat accounts. Nominate up to 3 people. Your shares transfer to them after your death — without nomination, the process takes years and requires court orders.

Nominee and Safety

SEBI now requires mandatory nomination for all Demat accounts. You must nominate at least one person (up to 3) who will receive your shares in case of your death. You can also opt out of nomination with a declaration, but this is not recommended.

E-CAS: Your monthly statement

Every month, your depository (CDSL/NSDL) sends an Electronic Consolidated Account Statement (e-CAS) to your registered email. This shows all your holdings across all Demat accounts linked to your PAN. Always verify your holdings match what you expect.

How to open a demat account in India online?
